Ziegert's 70 Highlights Best First Round Of Year

Stanford, Calif.-Madeleine Ziegert continued to show why she likes playing the Stanford Golf Course after shooting a one-under 70 Friday in the first round of the Stanford Intercollegiate.  Overall, San Jose State shot a 295 and is currently 16th in the team standings.

Ziegert is currently tied for 13th with her 70.  She made four birdies on her round and finished with six-straight pars.  The Stanford Golf Course is also where she had one of her biggest collegiate wins when she tied for medalist honors at the 2010 NCAA West Regional.  At that tournament, she started with a 67 in her first round.

Megan Osland and Rachelle Reali each shot a 74 for their round.  Osland had three birdies Friday, while Reali started her round by making eight consecutive pars.  Tiffany Nichols finished with a 77.  Kathleen Rojas, playing as an individual, shot a 79.

The Spartans started the day from hole 10 on par 71 course.  The team was +4 on the final nine holes played (holes 1-9).  The tournament features the top-four teams in the country and 14 of the top-50 schools.

"This was by far our best first round of the year," said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  "However, hole #7 (the team's 16th of the day), we played at +4 which is the difference in where we could be in the standings.  That hole spoiled an otherwise pretty good day for us."

Round two action begins Saturday at 8:30 a.m.  The Spartans tee off from hole 10, beginning at 10 a.m. Live scoring is available on www.golfstat.com.
