De Guzman, Osland Tied For 6th, Spartans Tied 4th

Sammamish, Wash.-Regina De Guzman and Megan Osland each shot a 73 Monday to help the San Jose State women's golf team finish tied for fourth after the first round of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational at the Sahalee Country Club.

De Guzman and Osland tied with three other players for sixth place.  De Guzman made three birdies on her round and was two-under on her last nine holes played (holes 1-9).  After a bogey on her first hole (#10), Osland made a birdie on her next hole and shot par over the next five holes.  She shot one under on her last nine holes of the day with a birdie and eight pars.

The Spartans are tied with #7 UC Davis and #39 Oregon at 302 in the team standings.   San Jose State is just three shots behind #40 Stanford who shot a 299.  Host #6 Washington shot a 293 and is in first place by four shots over UC Irvine at 297.

Other Spartan scores for the day included Cha Cha Willhoite at 76 with three birdies, Kathleen Rojas at 80 with one birdie and Stephanie Gibri at 89 and a birdie.

"Regina and Megan did a nice job for us today," said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  "Regina was a bit off-balance with her swing and putting in the first seven holes but turned things around after that.  Megan hit the ball really will off the tees and made some good up and downs.  She made pars from 50 and 100 yards to keep the momentum of her round going.  Megan also hit an awesome shot on #8 to within four feet of a hard-placed pin to make birdie.

"On this golf course, once you make a couple of bad swings, you start gripping tighter and trying to aim or direct your shots instead of taking shots.  We played the back nine (holes 1-9) pretty well and made some nice shots.  We had a good first day, but we have a long way to go."

San Jose State continues second-round action Tuesday morning.  The team begins the second round at 10:30 a.m., off of the first hole.  Live scoring is available at
