Two Spartans Tied For Second, Team Fourth

Sammamish, Wash.-Playing on one of the hardest courses the Spartans will see in competition this season, Katrina Delen-Briones and Madeleine Ziegert each shot a one-over 73 and are tied for second with three other players at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational.

San Jose State shot a 309 in the first round at the Sahalee Country Club to finish fourth, one shot behind third-place Stanford. The Spartans are in a log-jam of teams from first to sixth. From first-place California who shot a 296 to sixth-place Pepperdine at 311, there are just 15 shots that separate the top-six teams. San Jose State is one shot ahead of Washington and two shots in front of sixth-place Pepperdine.

Delen-Briones started the round with a double-bogey on her first hole of the day, hole 10 on the course, but made a comeback as she made three birdies in her round of 73. She made birdies on holes 18, 6 and 9, her final hole of the day.

Ziegert recorded birdies on holes 17 and 4 and limited herself to just three bogeys on the par-72 course that is playing at 6,136 yards.

"Both of them had fantastic rounds," said San Jose State head coach John Dormann. "This is a very challenging golf course, and the pin placements today were very difficult. We should not be intimidated because we practice on difficult courses almost daily.

"Kat and Maddie had to be on top of their game today, and both took the course one shot at a time. I think this shows what these two are capable of accomplishing, especially playing with some of the best players in the country at this tournament. Kat started with a double-bogey but did not let it affect her game, while Maddie was just consistent and made great shots."

Others contributing for the Spartans included Kimberly Punyasavatsut who shot an 81 in her first competition since the end of the 2007-08 season after redshirting last year. Cristina Corpus shot an 82, while Kanika Minocha had an 84.

The Spartans start round two Tuesday at 10 a.m., as the team begins on the first hole with Pepperdine and Washington. Live scoring is available on, and a link to the live scoring is available on under "Live Stats."
