Nichols Shoots 71; Spartans Ninth After First Round

Wolcott, Colo.-In her first collegiate tournament, Spartan women's golf Tiffany Nichols made it a memorable round as she shot her first under-par round with a 71 Sunday afternoon at the Golfweek Women's Conference Challenge.  San Jose State finished in ninth place at 302 as the team played at the Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, Colo.

Nichols finished her round with four birdies including three in her final nine holes.  Starting the day on the 10th hole, Nichols made two pars before a birdie on the 12th hole put her at one under.  A bogey on the 14th hole put Nichols back to even par before birdies on holes one, five and six put her at three-under par with three holes remaining.  Unfortunately, bogeys on the final two holes left Nichols at one-under par, 71, for her round.

"I am really thrilled for Tiffany and the way she played today," said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  "She played really well in all facets of her game and had great composure throughout the day even though she had a couple of rough holes."

Katrina Delen-Briones and Madeleine Ziegert each shot a 75 on their rounds.  Briones made three birdies on her round, while Ziegert made par on 15 of the 18 holes played.  Jody Ho shot an 81, while Jennifer Brumbaugh finished with an 84.

"On this golf course, you can get in big trouble if you get offline.   Unfortunately, that happened to us a few times today that contributed to our high scores.  If we stay focused, we will play better tomorrow."

Tulane and Virginia are tied for first at 287, and Brittany Altomare from Virginia and Therese Koelbaek from UNLV are tied for first at 69.

San Jose State will tee off on Monday in the first wave beginning at 10 a.m. MDT.  The team will play with Minnesota and Pepperdine.
