Willhoite, Rojas Shoot 72 In First Round

Vail, Colo.-Cha Cha Willhoite and Kathleen Rojas each shot an even-par 72 and tied for 12th on Monday to help the San Jose State women's golf team finish tied for eighth after the first round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge at Red Sky Golf Club in Vail, Colo.

Willhoite flirted with even par all day, never going more than one stroke above or below par.  She made five birdies on her round and made a key putt on her final hole (#9) for a bogey that allowed her to end the day at 72.

Rojas was even par through her first seven holes before making birdies on #17 and #3 to go to -2.  She made bogeys on #7 and #9 to finish at 72, and ended the day with four birdies.

"This is a very challenging course, and I am very happy with those two shooting par today," said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  "Cha Cha made some great birdies today and a nice putt on her final hole after the ball lipped-out for par and rolled farther from the hole.

"Kathleen hit the ball excellently today and played the way we expected she could.  She is playing with a lot of confidence and feeling comfortable on the course."

Rachelle Reali shot a 78 with a birdie on #16.  She was even through her first nine holes of the day (10-18) before shooting +6 in her final nine holes.  Megan Osland shot an 81 in her first round with two birdies, while Stephanie Gibri shot an 84 in her first tournament of the year.

Overall, the Spartans are tied for eighth with Nebraska at 303, just one shot behind San Diego in seventh and three shots behind Mississippi in sixth.  Pepperdine and Oklahoma are tied for the lead at two-under 286.

"We played up and down today, just like this golf course," said Dormann.  "On this course, you cannot put the ball in the wrong spot or it will roll away.  We played well on the hard holes, but we still need to take advantage of our birdie opportunities.  If we can eliminate the big mistakes, making bogeys instead of double and triple bogeys, we will do fine."

Second round action begins Tuesday at 10 a.m. MDT/9 a.m. PDT.  Live scoring can be found at golfstat.com.
