Spartans Second; Moston Third, Corpus Sixth at Ron Moore Intercollegiate

Highlands Ranch, Colo.San Jose State women’s golfer Erica Moston continued her streak of shooting par or better this season with a 72 Tuesday afternoon at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate at the Highlands Ranch Golf Club. San Jose State continues in second place after two days of golf.

Moston remained at four-under par and moved into third place among all individuals. Every round this season, she has shot par or better. Today’s round featured birdies on the par-four seventh, par-five 11th and par-three 17th holes. Moston is four shots behind leader Jane Chin of UC Irvine, who shot a 67 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 136.

Cristina Corpus also remained in the top-10 individually after her round Tuesday. She shot a one-over-par 73 and is now in sixth place with a two-day total of 144. Corpus recorded birdies on the par-five second and the par-five 18th holes.

“Erica and Cristina are playing very consistent for us right now and are leading the way for our team,” said San Jose State head coach John Dormann. “Erica was fighting the three-putts early in her round, but settled down and made a nice birdie on 17 and had a chance to make birdie on 18. Cristina finished her round strong with a birdie on her last hole and is working hard to get better every day.”

As a team, the Spartan shot a 298 for a two-day total of 591, 18 shots behind leader Denver and three shots ahead of third-place TCU. Other Spartan scores included Shraddhanjali Singh who shot a 77 for the second day for a 154 and tying for 30th. Madeleine Ziegert shot a 78 for a two-day total of 155 and tying for 32nd. Katrina Delen-Briones is tied for 39th after shooting a 76 on Tuesday and has a 156 for the tournament. Kanika Minocha, playing as an individual, shot a 76 and is not tied for 54th at 160.

“We are doing a lot of things well, but we are not handling the speed of the greens,” said Dormann. “In our four counting scores today, we had 12 three-putts in our round and have 24 three-putts for the tournament. We cannot keep doing this and expect to be competing with the top teams.

“This was a good test for us today playing with good teams. It was a good wake-up call, especially playing with Denver who is a top-15 team.”

San Jose State continues play on Wednesday with the final round of the tournament. Final round play begins at 8:30 a.m. MDT, with a shotgun start. Live stats are available on www.sjsuspartans.com and clicking on the Live Stats section.
