Women's Golf Second; Moston Shoots 68 At Ron Moore Intercollegiate

Highlands Ranch, Colo. For her fourth time in four rounds this season, San Jose State women’s golfer Erica Moston shot par or better with a 68 Monday at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate. As a team, the Spartans are second after shooting a five-over par 293.

Moston, who had shot only one round in the 60s before this season, shot her second consecutive round in the 60s with a 68. In her first bogey-free round of the season, she had birdies on holes six (par 4), 10 (par 4), 11 (par 5) and 15 (par 4). Moston is tied with Dawn Shockley of host Denver for second place, one shot behind Stephanie Sherlock of Denver who shot a 67.

“Erica started the round shaky but settled down and made some long putts for birdies,” said San Jose State head coach John Dormann. “She had some good chances on the last few holes to better her score and just missed.”

Cristina Corpus also had a solid round for San Jose State. She shot a one-under par 71 despite a double-bogey on the fifth hole. For the round, Corpus also made four birdies on holes one (par 4), six (par four), nine (par five), 17 (par three) and 18 (par 5).

“Cristina putted very well today,” said Dormann. “She has been working on her putting very hard and now it is starting to pay off for her.”

Other Spartans contributing on Monday included Madeleine Zieget and Shraddhanjali Singh who each shot a five-over 77, while Katrina Delen-Briones shot an 80. Kanika Minocha, playing as an individual, shot an 84 on Monday.

San Jose State enters the second round six shots behind Denver who shot a one-under 287. Kentucky and Wyoming are tied for third at 302, nine shots behind the Spartans.

“We played very good today on this course,” said Dormann. “There were tough pin placements today and the winds swirled which made you pay attention at all times. It was nice to see Erica and Cristina shoot under par, and now everyone must continue to improve their scores to keep us competitive in this very strong field.”

San Jose State tees off beginning at 9:10 a.m. MDT, with Denver and Kentucky on the first hole.
