Women's Golf Sixth After Day One At Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic

Ft. Collins, Colo.-Spartan sophomore women's golfer Madeleine Ziegert played the best round of her short career to start the 2009-10 season, and the San Jose State women's golf team finished the day in sixth place at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic.

After her freshman season where her best round was a 73, Ziegert shot a 71 in the first round of the tournament, her first under-par round at San Jose State. She had four birdies in her round and finished the day with seven birdies. Ziegert shot a 73 in the second round and stands at even par, 144, tied for 16th place overall.

"Maddie had a nice day for us," said San Jose State head coach John Dormann. "She had many birdie chances and has the potential to do even better for us."

Spartan teammate Katrina Delen-Briones is tied with Ziegert for 16th place, also shooting a 144 for the two rounds. She started the day with a 73 including four birdies in the first round and followed that up with a 71 and three birdies in the second round.

All five golfers contributed at least one score to the team totals on Monday. Shraddhanjali Singh shot a 73 in the first round and a 74 in the second round for a 147, and made five birdies during her play. Jody Ho shot her best round of her short collegiate career with a 73 in the first round and three birdies. She followed that with a 75 in the second round. Cristina Corpus opened the tournament with a 72 that included two birdies and shot a 76 in round two with three birdies.

In the first tournament of the year, San Jose State is in sixth place with a 582, three shots behind fifth-place Louisville and four shots back of fourth-place New Mexico. Overall, the Spartans made 27 birdies over the two rounds.

"We are hitting the ball really well," said Dormann. "Our putting is holding us back from shooting lower scores. We need to make the 10-to-12-foot putts because we are shooting very consistent scores. For our first tournament of the year, we are about where I expected. We will just go out Tuesday, do our best and see what happens."

Play continues Tuesday morning with a shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m. Mountain time. Live stats for the tournament are available at www.golfstat.com, and a link is available on www.sjsuspartans.com, and go to "Live Stats."
