Women's Golf's Ninth After Big Turnaround

Fort Collins, Colo.-With one of the biggest differences in scores between the first and second rounds in the past 10 years, the San Jose State women's golf team finished Monday tied for ninth with three other teams at 605 on the first day of the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic.

The Spartans started the day shooting a 313, 25 shots over par, in a first round that took over six hours to play.  The team combined to make just four birdies over 90 holes played by the five players.

However, the second round was a different story for San Jose State as two players shot par or better and the team made 16 birdies to shoot a 4-over par 292, a 21-shot difference between the two rounds.

After a 78 in her first round, Madeleine Ziegert led the team with a two-under 70 with a round that included five birdies, three in her final seven holes.  She is currently tied for 19th at 148.  Tiffany Nichols shot her second-best round as a Spartan with an even-par 72 in the second round and is tied 33rd at 150.  She made four birdies in her second round.

In her second round, Jennifer Brumbaugh made four birdies as she shot a 75 and finished the day at 152.  Freshman Megan Osland made her Spartan debut and also shot a 75 in the second round to finish at 155.  Rachelle Reali shot a 78 in her second round and finished at 159.

"We made a nice turnaround from our first to second rounds," said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  "I don't remember this big of a difference between two rounds since I have been here.  We played the second round the way we are supposed to play.  Tomorrow, we need to keep our energy level up and do it again."
