Women's Golf Shoots Best Team Score In 17 Months

Fort Collins, Colo.-The San Jose State women's golf team shot its lowest score in almost 17 months in the first round of Colonel Wollenberg's Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic on Monday.  The Spartans finished the two rounds in seventh place at 596, and newcomers Regina De Guzman and Cha Cha Willhoite are tied for 12th at 147.

The Spartans opened the tournament with a one-over 289 to tie current leader Texas Tech for first place, the best single-round score since shooting a 288 in the second round of the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Championships.  Megan Osland led the team with a one-under 71, De Guzman and Willhoite each shot even-par 72 and Rachelle Reali shot a two-over 74 for the 283.  Kathleen Rojas rounded out the scoring with an 81.

During the round, San Jose State recorded 14 birdies in 90 holes played as well as an eagle by Willhoite on her next-to-last hole of the first round.  On her third shot of the par-5, 494-yard hole 2, she holed out her shot from about 50 yards, pitching out over a bunker and down a hill.  The ball hit and trickled 10-12 feet to hole for her first collegiate eagle.  De Guzman led the team with five birdies on her round.

The second round found the Spartans making eight birdies but too many bogeys and double bogeys or higher found San Jose State shooting a 307.  De Guzman and Willhoite each shot a 75 and made two birdies.  Reali started and ended her round with birdies to shoot a 77 while Osland shot an 80 as both are tied for 32nd after the first day.  Rojas had an 85 and ended the day in 82nd place.

"I am not overly disappointed with our performance in the second round," said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  "We fought hard in the first round, finished the round strong and followed the game plan for this course.  In the second round, we got tired mentally which led to inconsistent play and the golf scored revealed that.

"This golf course if really firm, mainly because they did not have a lot of rain this summer.  It is hard to get the ball near the hole for birdies.  Birdies are hard to come by, but we need to figure out ways to get them."

Final round action begins Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. MDT/7:30 p.m. PDT.  Live scoring is available, with a link at www.sjsuspartans.com.
