Women's Golf Starts 2012-13 Season in Colorado

The 2012-13 San Jose State women's golf team opens the season at the Colonel Bill Wollenberg's Ptarmigan Ram Classic on Monday and Tuesday, September 10-11, at the Ptarmigan Golf Course in Fort Collins, Colo.

The Spartan lineup features two new faces for this season - Regina De Guzman and Cha Cha Willhoite.  De Guzman comes to San Jose State from the Philippines where she was one of the top junior golfers and represented her country at the Greg Norman Masters in Australia.  Willhoite finished second at the 2011 CIF/CGA Girls State High School Championships at Poppy Hills Golf Course last fall.  She finished tied for 20th at the 2012 Callaway Junior World Golf Championships this past July in San Diego.

Competing for the Spartans will be De Guzman, Willhoite, Megan Osland, Rachelle Reali and Kathleen Rojas.  Over the summer, Osland finished third at the 2012 British Columbia Women's Amateur Championship and shot a 66 in the third of four rounds.

"We need to compete to win at this tournament, especially with the number of good teams at this tournament," said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  "I would like to see us be in contention for all three rounds.  We need to continue the team chemistry we had last year when we came together and played for each other.  We need to start the season that way."

Teams participating include Baylor, Colorado, Colorado State, Fresno State, Long Beach State, Nevada, New Mexico, UNLV, Illinois, Wyoming, Idaho, Texas Tech, Louisville, UTEP, Northern Colorado, New Mexico State and the Spartans.

Teams begin play with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start each day.  The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.   Live scoring will be available on golfstat.com, with a link provided on the Spartan website under "Live Stats."
