Women's Golf 4th, Moston 6th at Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic

Ft. Collins, Colo.Senior Erica Moston shot a three-under 69 in the final round of the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic to help the San Jose State women’s golf team to a fourth-place finish Tuesday afternoon.

Moston finished sixth at the tournament with a four-under-par 212, the first time in her collegiate career that she has posted an under-par score in a tournament. Moston also shot just her second round in the 60s during her Spartan career as she made four birdies with just one bogey. Her other round in the 60s came this past March with a 68 at the Mountain View Collegiate.

“This (shooting under par) was something I knew I could accomplish and was doable at this course, especially with the set-up,” said Moston. “I was hitting the ball pretty good and took advantage of the shots that were close to the hole by making putts.”

The Spartans finished Tuesday’s round with a five-over 293, team score. Cristina Corpus and Katrina Delen-Briones each shot a 74 in the final round. Corpus finished tied 18th, while Delen-Briones was tied for 27th. Freshman Madeleine Ziegert finished her first collegiate tournament with a 76, good to tie for 34th. Newcomer Shraddhanjali Singh finished her first tournament as a Spartan with a 77 and tied for 72nd. For the day, San Jose State made 13 birdies and finished the tournament with 40 birdies.

“This is a good start to our year,” said San Jose State head coach John Dormann. “We were 27 shots better than last year’s score at this tournament and played much better this year. Erica’s under-par score was great for us. Our goal heading into each tournament is to finish in the top-five, and we accomplished the goal. We played smart and put in the ball in the right places to be successful.”

California won the tournament with an 846, six shots better that second-place Colorado who had an 852. Louisville was third at 858. Shannon Yocum of California won medalist honors with an eight-under 208.

San Jose State next plays at the Ron Moore Invitational in Denver from September 22-24.
