Erica Moston In U.S. Women's Amateur Match Play

Eugene, Ore.-----Erica Moston rallied with four birdies in a five-hole stretch on the back nine to post a one-under par 71 and qualify for match play at the 2008 U.S. Women’s Amateur golf championship.

Moston, the 2008 Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, posted a 36-hole total of 148 at the par 72, 6,484-yard Eugene Country Club. She opened stroke play competition on August 4 with a five-over par 77 and was eight over after her first four holes of the second and final round of stroke play.  A birdie-2 on hole #7 was the start of five-under par play for her next 11 holes.

The senior from Belmont, Calif., finished in a 25th place tie in the 156-player field. Only 16 players were under par in the second round and 14 of them advanced to the 64-player match play competition that begins on August 6.

Moston’s teammate, Cristina Corpus, a junior when the fall semester starts at the end of the month, recorded a 36-hole total of 157 to finish in 109th place. Corpus did not make the cut to qualify for match-play action. A 152 score was necessary to qualify for a playoff spot for the match-play portion of the championship.

To win the U.S. Women’s Amateur championship, a golfer must win six matches in match-play competition.

The Golf Channel will air live coverage of match play action on August 6 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. (PDT). www.usga.org will provide up-to-date scoring.
