Two Golfers To Compete At U.S. Women's Amateur

San Jose - After a five-player playoff for three spots at a sectional qualifier, San Jose State women’s golfers Erica Moston and Cristina Corpus earned their first-ever spots to the 2008 U.S. Women’s Amateur at the Eugene Country Club, August 4-10.

Moston and Corpus played in sectional qualifying at the Peach Tree Golf and Country Club in Lincoln, Calif., on Monday, July 14. They were part of a group of five who finished their round at 73 and forced a playoff for three spots. Eight players qualified from the section for the championship.

The reigning Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Moston finished the 2007-08 competition by playing as an individual at the 2008 NCAA Women’s Golf Championships. She finished the season ranked (by Golfstat) as the 89th best player in the country. This is the second consecutive summer that Moston has qualified for a USGA event as she played at the 2007 U.S. Women’s Publix in Lexington, Ky.

Corpus was a second team All-WAC selection this past season. She had her best finish, third place, of the season at the Peg Barnard California Collegiate. Corpus played at the 2005 USGA Junior Amateur where she advanced to the round of 32 in match play. She also qualified for the USGA Junior Amateur at 12-years-old.

Former Spartan Jenelle Gomez was the co-medalist at the qualifier as she shot a 70 to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Amateur.

Two former San Jose State players have won the U.S. Women’s Amateur. Juli Inkster won three straight titles in 1980, 1981 and 1982. Pat Hurst won the 1990 title at Canoe Brook C.C. in Summit, N.J.

Play at the 2008 U.S. Women’s Amateur begins on Monday, August 4th with stroke play for all 156 players. Stroke play continues on Tuesday before the field is reduced to 64 players for match play on Wednesday. Second and third round matches will be held on Thursday, followed by the quarterfinal matches on Friday and semi-final matches on Saturday. The final two players will play 36 holes on Sunday, August 10, to determine the champion.
