Pinehurst, N.C.—Former San Jose State University women’s golfer Juli Inkster finished her first round at the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open Championship with a one-over 71 Thursday. Pinehurst No. 2 was set up at 6,296 yards for the round.
Inkster started her round with four pars and a birdie on #3 in her first five holes. Bogeys and on #6 and #8 and pars on #7 and #9 found her at +1 (36) after nine holes. On the back nine, Inkster made two birdies (#10 & 15) and two bogeys (#11 & 16) to shoot an even-par 35 over the final nine holes and finish at 71.
Inkster is one of 11 players who finished the round at 71. First-round play was suspended at 7:12 p.m. EDT due to weather with 27 golfers still on the course. Play resumes Friday morning at 6:45 a.m. EDT, followed by the second round.
Playing in her 35th U.S. Women’s Open, Inkster played in the morning with Natalie Gulbis and Cheyenne Woods (Tiger’s niece). Inkster stated before the championship that this is probably be her last appearance at the U.S. Women’s Open. She has won the title twice – 1999 and 2002.
