Ziegert Advanced To Match Play at Ladies British Open Amateur Championship

After completing her freshman year at San Jose State, Spartan women’s golfer Madeleine Ziegert did not go back to Sweden and take it easy for the summer. This past week, she competed at the Ladies British Open Amateur Championship held at the Royal St. David’s Golf Club in Harlech in Northwest Wales.

During stroke play on June 9 and 10, Ziegert shot a 74 in the first round and 76 in round two to finish at 4-over 150 on the par 73, 6,202-yard course. She had six birdies in her first round and followed that up with four birdies in round two.

Seeded 33rd in match play on Thursday, June 11, Ziegert competed against 32nd seed Sally Watson of Scotland. Watson won the match one-up through 18 holes. In an ironic twist, the two could see more of each other in the Bay Area over the next three years as Watson is an incoming freshman at Stanford this fall.

Ziegert was a second team All-Western Athletic Conference selection this past season. She played in 22 rounds for the Spartans and ended the year with a 75.63 stroke average. Ziegert was also a second team All-WAC selection.
