Women's Golf Tied For First At NCAA Championships

Athens, Ga.—The San Jose State women’s golf team shot a 284 Tuesday and share the lead with Southern California at the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships at the University of Georgia Golf Course.

Not only is the team atop the leader board, Regan De Guzman shot a career-best five-under 67, and leads the individual leader board by two shots over Celine Boutier of Duke and number-one ranked Stephanie Meadow of Alabama. De Guzman made seven birdies in her round including five over her final nine holes.

“This feels great to end the day with a good round,” said De Guzman.  “My second shots were fantastic today.  The only fairway I missed was on the last hole (#9).  I am just so happy for myself and my team.”

The Spartans shot their best score at an NCAA Championship with the 284, six shots better than the previous low of 290 recorded three times.  In relation to par, the four-under ties for the lowest round in relation to par.  At the 1988 championships, the team was four-under par at the New Mexico State Golf Course (par 74).

San Jose State was one of 12 teams to tee off in the morning and shot the best score of the morning wave by five shots over UCLA who had a 289.  Among the four counting scores for the Spartans, the team made 15 birdies and just 10 bogeys and did not commit a double bogey.

“Today was an amazing performance by the entire team,” said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  “We had a lot of great ups and down, but I think this is a carry over of confidence from Stanford (NCAA West Regional).  Our key now is getting rest tonight and being ready to play our second round on Wednesday.  We have a long way to go.”

Three Spartans ranked among the top-20 on the scoreboard.  After De Guzman, Rachelle Reali and Kathleen Rojas are tied for 20th as each shot even par on their round and made three birdies.  Jennifer Brumbaugh is tied for 33rd after recording a 73 with two birdies, and Megan Osland rounded out the scoring with an 80.

The Spartans begin second round play Wednesday at 12:59 p.m. EDT/9:59 a.m. PDT.
