Moston Looks To Round Two At NCAA Championships

Albuquerque, N.M.-----Erica Moston’s 9-foot birdie putt on her final hole of the day was the highlight of her first round of the 2008 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships.

Moston, the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year playing as an individual qualifier from the NCAA West Regional Championship, had problems off the tee and finished with a nine-over par 81 on the par 72, 6,424 yard University of New Mexico Championship Course.

“Nothing worked for her today. It was one of those days when golf is a very humbling game,” said San Jose State coach John Dormann about Moston’s first 18 holes of the 72-hole championship.

“In her practice rounds she was hitting every fairway, but she was not hitting her driver in the fairway today,” added Dormann, who figured the Spartans’ number-one golfer landed her tee shot in just three or four out of a possible 14 fairways. “She had to abandon her driver and go to her 3-wood.

“She still has three more rounds to prove what a good player she is.”

Starting on the 10th hole, her round included three bogeys in the first six holes and was punctured by a quadruple bogey-9 on the 18th hole of the course. The front nine was more pedestrian with six pars, a bogey, and a double bogey before closing out the day with her only birdie to finish in a tie for 118th place in the 126-player field.

Wake Forest’s Nannette Hill is the individual leader with a course record-tying, five-under par 67. Alexandra Phelps of New Mexico, who played in the same threesome with Moston, is one of five golfers tied for second place at 69. Fourteen players were under par in the opening round.

The University of Southern California is the team leader with a four-under par 284. UCLA and Auburn are tied for second at 289 among the 24 schools competing for the team championship.

The Championship resumes May 21 and continues with 18 holes daily through May 23. Moston has a 2:00 p.m. (MDT) tee time on hole #1. Live scoring is available at
