Three Spartans On To U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying

Erica Moston and Cristina Corpus, members of the San Jose State University women’s golf team, and former honorable mention All-American Ashley Gomes advanced to sectional qualifying for the 2008 United States Women’s Open Golf Championship.

All three players played 18 holes at the Half Moon Bay (Calif.) Golf Links. Gomes, the 2004 Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year as a San Jose State senior, shot a 77. Moston, this year’s conference Player of the Year and an individual qualifier for the 2008 NCAA Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., signed for 78. Corpus carded an 80.

Eleven players from the Half Moon Bay site are moving on to sectional qualifying in early June. Former San Jose State greats Dina Ammaccapane and Janice Moodie are exempt from 2008 local qualifying and hope to earn a spot in the 156-player Open Championship field, June 26-29, in Minneapolis, Minn.

Two-time U.S. Open champion Juli Inkster, winner in 1999 and 2002, and 1989 NCAA champion Pat Hurst of San Jose State are among 60 players fully exempt from qualifying for the 2008 U.S. Open.

The United States Golf Association received 1,236 entries for this year’s championship.
