De Guzman T4th, Team 15th At West Regional

San Jose—Regan De Guzman shot a one-over 72 in the second round of the NCAA Women’s Golf West Regional, remains one-under par for the tournament and is tied for fourth. San Jose State shot a 304 for the second round and is 15th.

De Guzman made two birdies, three bogeys and 13 pars on her round.  She hovered at one-over par for most of the day after starting her round with a bogey on #10.  She did get back to even with a birdie on #12, but a bogey on #16 found her a one-over 37 at the turn.

De Guzman remains in contention for one of the two individual spots to advance to the NCAA Championship in two weeks.  The top-two individuals, not on advancing, will qualify to play in Athens, Ga., May 21-24.

“Regan had her short game working today and that helped her save some pars,” said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  “She stayed patient today and stuck to the plan we had.  Tomorrow will be very interesting for her.”

Rachelle Reali matched her first round score with a 76 on Friday.  She led the team with three made birdies in the second round.  Megan Osland and Kathleen Rojas each shot a 78, wile Jennifer Brumbaugh shot 81.  Collectively, the team made just seven birdies on the day.

“We have to make birdies,” said Dormann.  “Our round was very similar to yesterday, but when the team only makes seven birdies between five players, it takes a toll on you.  We had too many three-putts today that started early in our round and carried on throughout the day.”

“We have recorded good scores on this course this year.  The course is set up tough, but the good players are shooting good scores.”

The Spartans will tee off on Saturday off the first tee beginning at noon.
