Ziegert Maintains One-Shot Lead At NCAA West Regional

Stanford, Calif.—After shooting a 74 in her second round, Madeleine Ziegert continues to the lead the NCAA Women’s Golf West Regional at the Stanford Golf Course by one shot. The Spartans are currently 12th after shooting a 299 on Friday.

Ziegert is the only person in the 123-player field to be under par after two rounds. Her two-day total of 141 leads Megan McChrystal of LSU by one shot. McChrystal has shot an even-par 71 in her two rounds.

Ziegert opened her round with a bogey on her first hole, the par-4 10th hole. She then made seven consecutive pars before a double bogey on the par-4 18th hole and a bogey on the par-5 first hole put Ziegert at four-over. After a par on hole two, Ziegert made a birdie on the par-3 third hole and made par over the next six holes to finish at 74.

"Maddie struggled on her first nine as she hit only two greens,” said San Jose State head coach John Dormann. “After she three-putted 18 & 1, she stepped away and composed herself.

“I thought it was a very good performance because it is never easy to be under par in this type environment. She's had an awesome two rounds of putting and chipping and her short game is really good. If she can hit the ball better tomorrow, she can shoot around par again."

Katrina Delen-Briones led the Spartans in scoring in the second round with a one-over 72, in a round that included four birdies. Cristina Corpus shot a two-over 73 and made a team-high four birdies on the day. Shraddhanjali Singh recorded an 80 and made three birdies on her round, while Jody Ho shot an 83 with one birdie.

San Jose State was just one of six teams in the 24-team field to shoot 299 or better on Friday. Arizona leads the tournament by three shots at 585 after shooting the best team score of the day at 294.

The Spartans enter play Saturday morning in 12th-place at 602. The team is just three shots behind Iowa State who is in eighth-place at 599. The top-eight teams at the tournament advance to the NCAA Championships May 18-21 in Wilmington, N.C.

Final round action begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Stanford Golf Course. The Spartans will be paired with UNLV and Texas A&M and begin their round at 8 a.m. off the 10th tee. Spartan fans are encouraged to come to the regional and root on the team. Admission and parking are free to the event.
