Women's Golf Tied for 13th After Round One At NCAA West Regional

Tempe, Ariz. After a hot morning in Arizona, the San Jose State women’s golf team stands in 13th place after shooting a 299 at the 2009 NCAA West Regional at the Karsten Golf Course.

San Jose State is one of six teams tied for 13th place. With temperatures around 90 degrees at 8 a.m., the Spartans started the day from the 10th tee, playing the back-nine first before attacking the front-nine with five birdies

The second nine holes of the day proved to be the downfall for the Spartans. Holes six and nine posed problems for San Jose State as the team was +13 on those two holes. The Spartans did record six birdies on their final nine holes of the day.

Individually, Erica Moston and Katrina Delen-Briones each shot a one-over 73. Moston had four birdies during her round #5, #8, #17 and #18. She played her first nine holes of the day even.

Delen-Briones had two bogeys over first nine holes but played her last nine holes at one-under. She birdied the par 5 fifth hole and made par on the other eight holes to finish at one-over.

Cristina Corpus shot a 75, followed by Madeleine Ziegert at 78 and Shraddhanjali Singh at 79. Corpus contributed three birdies, while Singh had two and Ziegert added one.

“We have a big hill to climb, and we can make progress tomorrow,” said San Jose State head coach John Dormann. “We just have to take it one shot at a time. We seemed to handle the pressure of the regional fine today. We just had two really bad holes when that hasn’t happened to us all year.”

“We made uncharacteristic mistakes today that we do not normally make all year and got frustrated,” said Moston. “We need to stay patient with every shot. We can shoot low scores, and now we just need to go out tomorrow and shoot those scores.”

Top-ranked Arizona State leads the regional on their home course after shooting 15-under on Thursday. Arizona, Texas and Texas A&M are all tied for second after shooting 288. Arkansas, TCU, UC Irvine and USC are tied for fifth at 289. The top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championships, May 19-22, in Owings Mills, Md.

Second round action begins at 7 a.m. Friday. The Spartans do not begin play until 12:20 p.m. as they begin play from the first tee. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
