Moston's 73 Tops Spartans At NCAA Regional Golf

Lincoln, Calif.-----Erica Moston’s one-over par 73 was the best individual score by a San Jose State University player in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship West Regional at the Lincoln Hills Golf Club.

The Spartans have an 18-hole score of 300 and are tied for 15th place in the 21-team championship. Of San Jose State’s counting scores from Moston, Cristina Corpus, Katrina Delen Briones and Kimberly Punyasavatsut, the Spartans totaled five birdies, but only one from the four players over the last nine holes.

“We had three good scores and needed one more today,” said San Jose State coach John Dormann, whose team also counted the 74 from Punyasavatsut, Delen Briones’ 75 and Corpus’ 78. “We played some of the harder holes really well."

Number-two ranked Southern California grabbed the team lead with a five-under par 283. Tulsa, which was 11-over par after four holes, rebounded to a one-under par 287 for second place. UNLV is third at 288.

Arkansas at 295 and Oklahoma State at 293 round out the top five teams. Brigham Young, Michigan, Stanford and California are tied for sixth at 295. The top eight teams in the field advance to the NCAA Championships, May 20-23, at the University of New Mexico.

“There’s no panic right now. We’ll get up in the morning and go out with the plan to get four good scores instead of three. We need everybody to play well,”
added the Spartans’ coach.

Southern California’s and Arizona’s Alison Walshe share the first-round individual lead at 68.

The 54-hole championship continues with 18 holes on May 9 and concludes with 18 holes on May 10. Live scoring is available on www.golfstat.com.
