Ziegert Leads NCAA West Regional; Spartans 14th After Day One

Stanford, Calif.-Madeleine Ziegert saved her best round of golf of her young San Jose State career for Thursday as she shot a career-best 67 and leads the field by one shot at the 2010 NCAA West Regional held at the Stanford Golf Course. The Spartans ended the first round in 14th place after shooting a 303.

Ziegert made four birdies on her round, but the highlight of her round came on the par-5, 488-yard seventh hole. She recorded the tournament's only eagle of the day and the first of her Spartan career.

"I hit a good drive and was going for the green," said Ziegert. "After my second shot, I had about 30 yards to the hole and hit my wedge. The ball was starting to break to the right, hit the flag stick and went in the hole. I hit a similar shot on the 12th hole for a birdie as well.

"I went into today trying to stay positive and knowing I needed to take it one shot at a time. I spent a lot of time practicing my short game and changed my putting grip, and today it was good to see that work pay off for me. It was also nice to have Coach Dormann helping me and keeping me calm. I am going to go out tomorrow and play another round of golf, taking it one shot at a time. "

"I am really proud of Madeleine and her awesome round," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "Her short game and putting was the best display by a player in a single round I have seen in my five years at San Jose State. She has been working hard on her short game and was not afraid or rattled on the course today. She made solid par putts on 17 and 18 to end her round."

The only other Spartan birdie on the day came by Cristina Corpus, also on the seventh hole. She finished with a five-over, 76 and is tied for 48th.

Shraddhanjali Singh and Katrina Delen-Briones both recorded an 80 for her round. Delen-Briones started the first nine holes at nine-over par but rebounded to finish her round with nine consecutive pars. Jody Ho shot an 81 to round out the Spartan scoring.

San Jose State begins the second round at 8 a.m. Friday from the 10th hole. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com with a link on the Spartan web site under "Live."
