Mesa, Ariz. - The three-time reigning Western Athletic Conference champion San Jose State Spartan women's golf team opened their defense with their lowest first round of the year, a three-under 291 to take an eight stroke lead over Hawaii on Monday.
All five Spartans are among the top-10 on the leaderboard with senior Madeleine Ziegert posting the low round for San Jose State, a two-under 70 on the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz. Ziegert is two strokes behind leader Charlee Kapiioho from Hawaii, who shot her season-best 68.
"I struggled a bit on the last four holes because of the heat," Ziegert said, despite finishing with four consecutive pars. By the end of the round, the temperatures had reached triple digits on the course.
On the par 3's Ziegert is leading the tournament with a 2.50 stroke average. She along with teammate Jennifer Brumbaugh recorded five birdies on the day.
Brumbaugh is a tournament-best three under on the par fives and is in a tie for sixth place, at one-over par 73, with teammate Megan Osland and two others. Osland had two birdies in her round and also finished with four consecutive pars.
Rachelle Reali and Kathleen Rojas are among four golfers at 75 and in a tie for 10th place.
"On the front nine I was a bit nervous, and it mostly showed on my approach shots," Rojas said. "I figured out what I the issue was, made an adjustment on the back nine and shot five strokes better (plus four-to-minus one)."
"I am happy with the way we came out today," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "We left a few shots out there on the back nine, but overall, we are in a good position after the first day."
"You could not have more diverse conditions from one week to the next. We were at Half Moon Bay last week, and now we are in the desert. The heat had some effect on all the competitors, but everyone has to battle the same conditions."
The Championship continues Tuesday morning with the Spartans' Reali teeing off at 8:20, Rojas at 8:30, Osland at 8:40, Brumbaugh at 8:50 and Ziegert in the final group at 9:00 a.m. Fans can follow the action at www.sjsuspartans.com.
