Women's Golf Tied For 2nd, De Guzman Second At WAC

Mesa, Ariz.—The San Jose State women’s golf team opened defense of its four consecutive Western Athletic Conference titles Monday as the team shot a 297 and ended the day two shots out of first place at the 2013 Club Glove WAC Championship.

The Spartans are currently tied with #47 UTSA at 297, and are just two shots behind #29 Denver who had a 295 in the first round at the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.  Regan De Guzman led San Jose State by shooting a two-under 70 and is in second place, two shots behind leader Tonje Daffinrud of Denver had four birdies and an eagle in her round of 68.

“We had a solid first round and are in good position for tomorrow,” said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  “We made some uncharacteristic mistakes for us and had too many three-putts on the day.  On this course, you cannot miss fairways, or you get into a place (desert or bushes) where you cannot do anything with the ball.

“We knew this was going to be a very evenly-matched tournament.  We need to minimize our mistakes, and we will be fine.”

De Guzman was just one of two players who shot under par in the first round with her 70, her fifth round under par this season.  De Guzman started the round with four birdies on the front nine for a 32, but started the back nine with back-to-back three-putts on #10 and #11.  After a birdie on #12, she again posted bogeys on #13 and #14 before finishing with a birdie and three pars.  She leads the field with six birdies made.

“Regan was fantastic on the front nine today,” said Dormann.  “She got a little a nervous on the back nine and had three-putts on #10 and #11.  With such a good start on her first nine holes, she started to get ahead of herself.  But she recovered nicely and kept us in it.”

Three other Spartans are ranked among the top-12 golfers.  Jennifer Brumbaugh is tied for seventh at 75, and made birdies on #12 and #15.  Megan Osland and Kathleen Rojas are tied for 12th at 76.  Osland is tied for the lead in par-three scoring at -1 and made four birdies on her round.  Rojas made three birdies on her round.  Rachelle Reali shot a 79 on the day including 12 pars and is 23rd.

Second round action begins Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. PDT, with the Spartans starting play at 8:50 a.m. PDT with Denver and UTSA.  Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
