Women's Golf Holds Two-Shot Lead At WAC Championships

Mesa, Ariz.—San Jose State again shot the best team score of the day and holds a two-shot lead over Hawaii after the second round of the 2010 Western Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Championships at the Longbow Golf Club.

The top-four teams in the standings are all within eight shots of each other. Hawaii trails by two shots, followed by Idaho five shots back and New Mexico State, who also shot a 302 Tuesday, eight shots back.

Madeleine Ziegert led the Spartans on Tuesday with a 74 and is currently tied for fourth place at 149, just two shots behind leader Kayla Mortellaro from Idaho. Ziegert had two birdies on her round and seven consecutive pars to end her round.

Cristina Corpus, Shraddhanjali Singh and Katrina Delen-Briones each shot a 76 on Tuesday. Corpus and Singh are tied for sixth at 150, while Delen-Briones is 16th at 157. Jennifer Brumbaugh rounded out the Spartan scoring with an 80.

“We did not play our best today, but we are still leading the tournament,” said Spartan head coach John Dormann. “We need to play better in our final round tomorrow.”

Final round action begins Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. The Spartans start teeing off at 8:50 a.m. with Hawaii and Idaho. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com, and a link is provided on the Spartan web site under “Live”.
