Women's Golf 3rd, Ziegert 4th At Pacific Coast

Half Moon Bay, Calif.-In a tournament that features nine top-40 teams, the San Jose State women's golf team showed their prowess on Monday, shooting back-to-back 292s to end the day third at 584 after two rounds of the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate at the Half Moon Bay Golf Links.

The Spartans are just seven shots behind third-ranked USC who shot a 577 on Monday.  #1 UCLA leads the tournament at -13.  San Jose State is just one shot ahead of #40 Stanford and #29 Washington (585), two ahead of #14 California (586), five in front of #19 Arizona (589), seven in front of #23 UC Davis (591) and eight in front of #21 Oregon (592).

Madeleine Ziegert shot her third round of 69 this season as she started the tournament 69-73 for a 142 and is currently fourth individually.  In her first round, she led the tournament in par 5 scoring and had five birdies.  Ziegert added two birdies in her second round.

Megan Osland is tied for 13th after shooting 72-74 for a 446.  She recorded her third round of par with her 72 in round one.   Osland had five birdies between her two rounds.

After shooting a 77 in their first rounds, Kathleen Rojas and Jennifer Brumbaugh bounced back in round two.  Rojas shot a 72, her third par round of the year to finish at 149, good for 29th place.  Brumbaugh shot a 73 and is currently 39th.

Rachelle Reali opened the tournament with a 74, tying for her best round of the year, and added an 82 to finish at 156, good for 68th place.

"This was by far our best 36-hole day in a few years," said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  "We know there are a lot of top teams at this tournament, but we just went out and stuck to our game plan for the day.  We played the par 5s really well today.

"Everyone gave us a key score today, something we have been missing all year.  We also finished the second round strong with many making birdies on their last or next to last holes.  After a nice start to the tournament, we need to go out tomorrow and finish strong."

Final round action begins Tuesday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.  The Spartans will play with #1 UCLA and #3 USC in the final round.  Live scoring is available on golfstat.com.
