Corpus 2nd At Peg Barnard; Spartans Fifth

Stanford, Calif.-----Cristina Corpus posted a one-over par 72 leading San Jose State University to a fifth-place start after the first round of the Peg Barnard California Collegiate women’s golf tournament.

The Spartans have a first-day total of 307 on the par 71 Stanford University Golf Course and trail tournament leader California by 12 strokes. Washington is second at 297, host Stanford, third at 300 and Oregon State, fourth at 303, in the 14-team field.

“We played very well after getting off to a slow start. We were under par as a team for our last four or five holes,” said San Jose State head coach John Dormann, whose team is counting every score posted since freshman Katrina Delen Briones is not playing due to back problems. Other than Tennessee-Chattanooga, the remaining 12 teams have five players and are able to discard the day’s high score.

“It was great to see Cristina bounce back quickly after a rough tournament at Arizona State last weekend.”

Corpus, who has two top-10 finishes in eight tournaments this season, but finished 65th at the ASU/Ping Invitational, is one of four golfers tied for second. Washington’s Karinn Dickinson is the tournament leader with an even par 71.

Erica Moston is the only other San Jose State player in the top-20 after posting a 75. She heads into the final 18 holes on April 12 tied for 14th place.

The Spartans will begin the final round on holes 5 through 7 in the shotgun format that starts at 8:00 a.m. There is no admission charge and free parking is available at the golf course and near the university’s horse stables that are near the holes on the first nine of the course.
