Women's Golf Tops Two Top-25 Teams

Tempe, Ariz.-----Kanika Minocha and Erica Moston each posted one-over par 73’s in the final round leading San Jose State University to a 12th place finish at the Ping/ASU Invitational women’s golf tournament.

The Spartans finished 54 holes with a 913 team total and in front of top-25 nationally ranked Stanford and Vanderbilt, two teams that tied for 14th place at 920.

Minocha’s 73 was her best in her one-plus seasons at the major college level. Moston’s 73, her second of the tournament, propelled her to fifth top-20 finish this season tying for 18th place at 221. The Spartans’ number-one player, ranked 96th nationally, finished ahead of 14 of the nation’s top-100 players in this tournament.

“We’re getting low rounds from everybody and it’s a good thing that different people are shooting good scores. People have to remember that we have a young team. Erica (Moston), who played well in this tournament, is our only upperclassman,” said San Jose State coach John Dormann, whose team played the last 18 holes without freshman Katrina Delen Briones who withdrew due to a bothersome back. The Spartans had to count the 80 by Kimberly Punyasavatsut and the 82 by Cristina Corpus in the final round with Delen Briones unavailable while the other teams in the field discarded their high score.

The University of Southern California completed a start-to-finish team title with an 854 total. Host Arizona State was second at 865. UCLA at 876, Texas A&M at 879 and Georgia at 880 rounded out the top five teams in the 17-team field that included 12 teams ranked 25th or higher nationally by GolfStat.

Arizona State’s Anna Nordqvist and Southern California’s Dewi Claire Schreefel tied for first place among the 93 players in the field at seven-under par 209. Schreefel won a one-hole playoff with a par for the individual championship. Only seven golfers matched or bettered par on the par 72, 6,230-yard Karssten Golf Course n the Arizona State University campus.

San Jose State returns to action, April 12 & 13 at the Peg Barnard California Collegiate hosted by Stanford University at the Stanford Golf Course.
