Two Seconds At MountainView Collegiate Golf

Tucson, Ariz.-----For the second consecutive tournament this spring and with a strong final round, San Jose State University finished second at the MountainView Collegiate women’s golf tournament hosted by the University of Colorado.

The Spartans began the final round in a three-way tie for fifth place and vaulted into second with the second-best team score of the final 18 holes, a 294 for an 889 total over the par 72, 6,126-yard MountainView Golf Course.

Indiana, which shared the 36-hole lead with Oklahoma, had the best team score of the final round, a 291, and finished first at 880. Oklahoma dropped into a third-place tie with Texas Tech at 891. Missouri rounded out the top five teams in the 17-team field at 892.

“It was a good bounce-back performance for us. I’m very encouraged by our play in the first and third rounds,” said San Jose State head coach John Dormann, whose team opened the tournament with a one-under par 287. “All five players had a good score one way or another. That’s what it will take to compete with the top teams in the country.”

San Jose State’s Erica Moston, the 36-hole leader, finished second in the 93-player field at even par 216 after a final round 76. Lauren Harling of Indiana slipped into first place at 215 after posting an even par 72 for the last 18 holes.

“Erica played great for 53 holes, but had one bad hole that cost her the chance to win,” said Dormann about Moston who triple-bogeyed her 17th hole of play in the final round.

Moston now has a pair of second-place finishes this spring. She also second at the Qdoba Invitational hosted by the University of Miami in February.

Freshman Katrina Delen-Briones posted her first top-20 finish of the spring season and her third in her first season at the major college level tying for 20th at 224. Sophomore Cristina Corpus had the low score for San Jose State in the final round with a 72.

San Jose State returns to action, April 4, playing in the three-day, 54-hole Ping/ASU Invitational hosted by Arizona State University.
