Moston Leads MountainView Collegiate; Team Tied For 5th

Tucson, Ariz.-----Erica Moston was one of two players to match or better par in each of the first two rounds and has a three-stroke lead heading into the final 18 holes of the MountainView Collegiate women’s golf tournament.

Moston took the lead after the morning opening round with a career-best four-under par 68 on the par 72, 6,126-yard MountainView Golf Course. The junior from Belmont, Calif., added an even par 72 in the afternoon round for a 36-hole total of 140. She holds a three-stroke advantage over the Indiana twosome of Lauren Harling and Laura Nochta.

Louisville’s Sara-Maude Juneau and Texas Tech’s Rosalyn Kim are the only other players heading into the final round at par or better with even par scores of 144. Kim was able to match Moston’s feat of back-to-back rounds of par or better with a pair of 72’s.

In the team competition, San Jose State is in a three-way tie for fifth place at 595, six strokes behind co-leaders Indiana and Oklahoma. The Spartans shared the lead after 18 holes with Oklahoma with a season-best team score of one-under par 287. Katrina Delen-Briones’ one-under par 71 and Cristina Corpus’ 72 were big factors in San Jose State scoring under par as a team in the morning round.

“Everybody played relaxed and confident and played the play we thought we could play on this course. It’s not a difficult course, not complicated and pretty straight forward,” said San Jose State coach John Dormann. “We showed our potential (as a team), but in the afternoon, we had some big numbers and made mental mistakes.”

Missouri is third at 591 and Texas Tech is fourth at 594. East Carolina, eighth at 596 and Iowa State ninth at 599 remain in contention for the team championship.

The tournament’s final round is Sunday, March 31.
