Women's Golf Shoots Five-Under Par To Lead MountainView Collegiate

Tucson, Ariz. After not playing in a competitive tournament for almost six weeks, the San Jose State women’s golf team showed no rust in the first two rounds of the MountainView Collegiate.

The Spartans shot a five-under par, 571, for their two-round total on Saturday.  The team is seven shots ahead of UNLV who shot a 578.

San Jose State shot its best round of the season in the first round with a four-under par 284, and followed that with a one-under par 287 in the second round.  The Spartans lead the tournament in birdies with 34 and in par three and par four scoring.

“We played today like we are capable of playing all season,” said San Jose State head coach John Dormann.  “We put it all together today in perfect weather.  Now, we just have to follow that up with another solid round on Sunday.”

Individually, Erica Moston and Crisitna Corpus are tied for first-place with Cindy LaCrosse from Louisville, each shooting a four-under 140 on Saturday.  Moston shot even par in the first round and followed that with a four-under 68 in the second round, the fourth round in the 60s for her this season.  Moston is tied for the lead in birdies made for the tournament with nine.

Corpus tied for the top-score in the first round with a three-under 69, the first time she shot in the 60s during her Spartan career.  Corpus followed in the second round with a one-under 71.  She is tied for the best par four scoring and ended the day with eight birdies.

Erica and Cristina were steady for us today,” said Dormann.  “Cristina really came around on the back-nine of her first round and made four birdies.  She was playing like the play we know she can be.  Erica made some long putts today and was just solid as usual.”

All five Spartans are ranked among the top-30 players in the tournament.  Katrina Delen-Briones shot her third round under par with a 71 in the first round and added a 73 in the second round for a 144, to tie for ninth place.  Shraddhanjali Singh recorded eight birdies on the day and shot 72-76 for a 148 and is tied for 22nd.  Madeleine Ziegert is tied for 29th after shooting a 74 and 75 for a 149.

The Spartans play the final round of the tournament Sunday morning.
