Ace Fuels Brumbaugh At Mountain View Collegiate

TUCSON, Ariz. -- San Jose State senior Jennifer Brumbaugh took the spotlight during the first 36 holes of the Mountain View Collegiate on March 23 with two sub-par rounds and an ace.

Brumbaugh stepped up to the tee at the par-three 13th hole and in one fell swing rolled it in for a hole-in-one.

"I wasn't sure if it went in at first," said Brumbaugh. "Then I saw the reaction around the green and I knew it went in. I played it 165 yards and hit a pretty little fade that took one bounce and rolled straight to the hole."

Brumbaugh hit San Jose State women's golf's first hole-in-one since Sirapa Kasemsamran hit one in the 2006 Stanford Women's Intercollegiate.

The Scotts Valley, Calif., native finished round one with a three-under 69 and fired a 67 to back it up in round two giving her a 136 (-8) and a four-stroke lead.

She became the first Spartan to have back-to-back sub-70 rounds since Erica Moston shot 68 in round one and 69 in round two of the 2009 Mountain View Collegiate, and is only the third to do it in SJSU women's golf history.

"This may have been the best back-to-back rounds I have ever seen as head coach here," said Spartans' head coach John Dormann. "She was absolutely lights out."

As a team, San Jose State shot 293-295-588 (+12) on the 6,227-yard par 72 Mountain View Course and is in seventh place out of 15 teams.

Freshman Kathleen Rojas contributed a pair of 72's for an even-par 144 and is in a tie for 12th place individually.

"Kathleen played very consistent today," said Dormann. "It is a great thing for the team to have that kind of play from a freshman."

Madeleine Ziegert shot 77-77-154 (+10) and is tied in 54th place while Jordanne Barr finished a stroke behind Ziegert at 155.

Also for the Spartans, Rachelle Reali shot 76-82-158 (+14) and is tied for 75th.

San Jose State is 18 strokes behind tournament leader Texas Tech who shot 570 (-6). The Mountain View Collegiate concludes tomorrow with the final 18 holes.
