Women's Golf 3rd; Brumbaugh, Reali Tied for 7th

Tucson, Ariz.-After losing top-player Regan De Guzman to a knee injury early in the second round Friday, the San Jose State women's golf team shot its second-best round of the season at the MountainView Collegiate and finished the day in third place at 577.   Individually, Jennifer Brumbaugh and Rachelle Reali are tied for seventh at even-par 144.

The Spartans opened the tournament shooting its best team score of the season with a 288 in the first round, good for third place.  De Guzman led the Spartans with a two-under 70 on the round and was tied for third in the individual standings.  Kathleen Rojas shot a one-under 71, followed by Reali at 73, Brumbaugh at 74 and Megan Osland at 76.

Six holes into the second round, things changed for the Spartans at De Guzman felt something happen to her left knee on her tee shot on the sixth hole.  She was forced to withdraw from the round and was two-under par through five holes in the second round and four-under par for the tournament.

The rest of the team then rose to the occasion and shot a 289, tying for the second-best team score of the season.  For the first time in her Spartan career, Reali shot under par for a round with a 71.  She made three birdies and a double bogey in her round including a par on her final hole in which she had to get up-and-down from 60 yards and made a nine-footer for par.

Brumbaugh shot her first under-par round of the season with a 70.  Rojas followed up her 71 with a 75 and is tied for 16th at 146.  Osland rounded out the Spartan scoring with a 73 and is tied for 34th at 149.

"I am really proud of the way we played today, especially in the second round when Regan could not go anymore," said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  "We were able to overcome the adversity of not having our top player.  I liked their enthusiasm and attitude, knowing that all four scores would have to count.

"We had good solid scores in two rounds today and have to go out and do the same tomorrow, whether we have four or five players."

Final round action begins with a 7:30 a.m. shot gun start.  The Spartans will tee off from holes 1-3 with Texas Tech and Northern Arizona.
