Women's Golf Holds Team & Individual Leads

Fresno, Calif.-Consistency was the name of the game for the San Jose State women's golf team Monday as the team shot a 294 in each of the two rounds played at the Fresno State Lexus Classic to give the Spartans a two-shot lead at 588.  Senior Madeleine Ziegert is at the top of the leaderboard by one shot with a two-under 142.

The Spartans trailed Cal State Fullerton by five shots after the first round.  Ziegert led the team with a two-under 70 to tie for first, her seventh under-par round of the season.  Megan Osland shot her second par round of the year with a 72, followed by Jordanne Barr with a 75, Jennifer Brumbaugh at 77 and Kathleen Rojas at 80.

In the second round, Ziegert was again consistent for the Spartans, shooting a 72 on a round with two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars.  Rojas forgot about her first round as she started the second round with five consecutive birdies (holes 3-7) and finished at 72.   Osland, Barr and Brumbaugh all shot 75 to give San Jose State a two-shot lead over the Titans.

All five players finished the day among the top-21 players.  Ziegert has a one-shot lead over Tisha Alyn Abrea of CS Fullerton.  Osland is tied for fourth at 147, five shots behind Ziegert.  Barr is tied for 15th at 150, while Rojas and Brumbaugh are tied for 21st at 152.

"We finished the first round strong and carried that into the start of our second round," said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  "We are playing to the level of our ability right now.  There are a few tricky holes on the course, but most are scoreable.  We took advantage of the holes where you can make birdies, holes 3-7 and 16-17.

"I am really proud of our young players, especially Kathleen who made the five birdies in a row.  Maddie is being very consistent in her rounds as well.  Tomorrow we just need to come out with the same game plan as today and execute the shots we need."

San Jose State begins final round action at 9:20 a.m., with Ziegert teeing off at 9:52 a.m.  Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
