Spartans First After Two Rounds At Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational

San Jose-Rain and wind and sun and hail and even a rainbow could not stop the San Jose State women's golf team Monday from taking a six-shot lead after two rounds of the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational at the Almaden Golf and Country Club.

The Spartans survived everything thrown at them Monday on the golf course, shooting a 295 in the first round and following that with a 300 in the second round for a 595 and a six-shot lead over UC Davis.  The Aggies shot the low second round with a 297 and stand at 601.  California is third at 602, followed by Fresno State at 604.

Individually, Cristina Corpus leads all individuals with a one-under par 143, including a 71 in the second round after making birdies on the final two holes of the day.  She leads by one shot over Caroline Hedwall of Oklahoma State and Louisa Lies of Fresno State.  Hedwall shot the low first round score with a 69.

Katrina Delen-Briones is in fourth place with a 146, two-over par. She shot a 72 in the first round and a 74 in round two.

Other Spartan players include Shraddhanjali Singh who is tied for 17th at 152, followed by Madeleine Ziegert and Jody who are tied for 33rd at 155.  Playing as individuals, Kim Punyasavatsut is tied for 25th at 153, while Kanika Minocha is tied for 69th at 164.

"We had everything thrown at us today on the course," said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  "We were able to handle the adverse conditions and maintain our lead.  I am really proud of the way Cristina ended her round, and I hope that momentum carries us into Tuesday's round."

Play at the tournament begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.  Live scoring is available at
