San Jose, Calif.-----Stiff winds on the final day sent most scores soaring as San Jose State finished sixth in the 12-team Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational women's golf field.
The Spartans posted a final round 318 for a 922 total on the par 72 Almaden Country Club course.
It's not what our goal was coming into the tournament. We were hoping to finish better than sixth. We were looking to beat some teams ranked ahead of us. We felt good about the way we were playing and our preparation for the tournament. It just didn't happen," said San Jose State women's golf coach John Dormann.
California won the team championship with an 879. The Golden Bears were the only team with a score under 300 in each of the three rounds. With the best team score of the final round, a 295, Oregon finished second at 892. UC Davis was third at 901.
Joanne Lee and Daniela Holmqvist, both from California, were the only two players under par for 54 holes. Lee birdied the final two holes and was three-under on the back nine shot a one-over par 73 for 214 total to earn medalist honors. Holmqvist was a shot behind at 215 following a final round 75. Her bogey on the 17 th hole cost her a chance to share the top spot with her teammate.
Lalita Patiaksiri of UC Irvine was one of three players with an even par 72, the best score for the last 18, and finished third at even par 216. The average final round score was 80.45.
"It was hard. I knew that 6:00 a.m. when I got here. That's why we adjusted some of the tee boxes in anticipation of it. There is no question wind is the biggest enemy of a golfer," added Dormann. "If you notice, the good players shot some pretty good scores today. It's because they are experienced and know how to handle themselves with their mental game as much as their physical game," the Spartans' coach added.
Madeleine Ziegert was San Jose State's top finisher at 223, good for tenth place. Jennifer Brumbaugh and Jordanne Barr also placed in the top-20 in the 66-player field. Brumbaugh tied for 15th at 228 and Barr tied for 17th at 229.
"She (Maddie) scraped it around all week. I think she only hit six greens today and managed three-over. A lot of times, she has to rely on her short game. She did it this week. She has had a lot of success in this tournament in the past, so I'm happy for her," Dormann said. "That's a good finish for her here and, hopefully, gets her going for the rest of the semester."
The Spartans are back in action, March 12 & 13, at the Fresno Lexus Classic.
