De Guzman Second at Juli Inkster Spartan Invite

San Jose, Calif.-For the second tournament this spring, Spartan women's golfer Regan De Guzman finished second individually, this time at the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational played at the Almaden Golf and Country Club.   San Jose State finished ninth at 920, and #14 Stanford won the team title with an 878.

De Guzman shot an even-par 72 Tuesday in the final round of the tournament to finish at two-over, 218.  She finished second to Mariah Stackhouse of Stanford who finished with a four-under, 212.  The two players also finished 1-2 at the Peg Barnard Intercollegiate in February.

De Guzman started the day with a birdie on hole #8 and went to two-under with a birdie on hole #11.  She made bogeys on #17 and #1 before finishing with six consecutive pars.

"Making a birdie on my first hole of the day gave me a lot of confidence to start the day," said De Guzman.  "But I also knew that I could be too aggressive if I was not careful.  I have been working on focusing on each shot and not getting ahead of myself.  I have to be focused and centered on the course."

The Spartans finished the day in eighth place after shooting a 311.  Megan Osland finished tied for 36th at 232 after shooting a 76. Rachelle Reali tied for 49th at 237; Jennifer Brumbaugh tied for 53rd at 238, while Stephanie Gibri tied for 55th at 239.  Jody Ho played as an individual and was 72nd at 252.

"This was a disappointing finish for our team, especially with the way Regina performed for us," said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  "We expect better from ourselves, and we have to learn how to manage our emotions on the course.

"With the difficulty of the course and the wind, Regan shooting par was an accomplishment.  She has taken what she has been taught since the fall and is evolving into a top-flight college player."

San Jose State next plays at the Mountain View Collegiate, March 15 and 16, in Tucson, Ariz.
