San Jose, Calif.-Four top-50 ranked women's golf teams occupy the top-four spots of the 2013 Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational, led by #14 Stanford who shot a 578 in two rounds Monday at the Almaden Golf & Country Club. San Jose State finished the day tied for eighth with Santa Clara at 609.
Stanford shot a one-under 287 in the first round and followed with a 291 in the second round. The Cardinal lead #41 California by nine shots as the Golden Bears shot a 587. #9 Washington is third at 590, followed by #17 North Carolina State at 596.
Individually, Stanford's Mariah Stackhouse is the only player under-par at three-under, 141. She shot a 70 in round one, followed by a 72.
For San Jose State, Regan De Guzman is tied for sixth at 146. She shot 74-72 on the day and made seven birdies over the two rounds. Jennifer Brumbaugh is tied for 30th at 152 after shooting a 72 in the second round with six birdies. Megan Osland and Rachelle Reali are tied for 47th at 156, while Stephanie Gibri is tied for 51st at 157. Jody Ho, playing as an individual is 73rd at 171.
The Spartans started the day shooting a 312 in the first round and were 12th after the first round. The team then rallied in the second round for a 297, tying for the fourth-lowest score.
"We had a very poor performance our first round," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "We put a lot of pressure on ourselves today because of our performances in the first round and did not handle that situation well. The second round was much better.
"Regan continues to be consistent for us. Her short game has improved a great deal over the past few weeks. Jen made six birdies for us in the second round, which was a big key, but we have to cut down on our bogeys. If we can clean up some unnecessary par-5 bogies, we can shoot a good score on Tuesday and move in the right direction on the leaderboard."
The final round of the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational begins Tuesday with an 8:15 shot gun start at the Almaden Golf & Country Club.
