Spartans Ninth After First Round Of Cal Classic

Pleasanton, Calif.-After starting the first round very strongly on the front-nine, the San Jose State women's golf team found themselves tested on the back-nine and ended the round ninth at 311 as the team plays at the Cal Classic at the Ruby Hill Golf Club in Pleasanton.

The Spartans opened the day shooting one-over par as a team over the first nine holes of the day, making six birdies over those holes.  Over the final nine holes of the day, the team shot a combined +19 and did not make one birdie.

"When we play well, we are a very good team," said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  "We just need to keep our focus and confidence for 18 holes.  We need to focus on the shot at hand and stick to the game plan."

Megan Osland led the team on Monday, shooting a 76 in a round that she made 10 consecutive pars to start the day.   She is tied for 17th place.

Regan De Guzman and Cha Cha Willhoite each shot a 78 and are tied for 28th.  De Guzman made two birdies on the front nine.  Willhoite was one-under par through 12 holes with a birdie on #4 and 11 consecutive pars.

Jennifer Brumbaugh had a strong start with two birdies over the first nine holes and was even at the turn.  She finished the day with a 79 and is tied for 37th.  Rachelle Reali made a birdie in her round and shot an 82 to finish tied for 55th.  Ann Sabater played as an individual and shot an 81 and is tied for 48th.
