Barr Eighth, Women's Golf Fifth at Peg Barnard

Stanford, Calif.-Freshmen led the San Jose State women's golf team in the first round of the Peg Barnard Classic as Jordanne Barr shot the best Spartan round of the day with a 75.  The Spartans finished the first round in fifth place with a 306 on the par-71 Stanford Golf Course.

Barr is currently tied for eighth place after her round on Saturday.  She is tied with fellow freshman Kathleen Rojas who is playing as an individual at the tournament.

Freshman Megan Osland and senior Madeleine Ziegert each shot a 76, while Tiffany Nichols and Jennifer Brumbaugh each had a 79.

"We hit the ball well but did not capitalize on our birdie opportunities," said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  "There were some difficult pin placements and the wind was a factor.  All three freshman (Jordanne, Megan, Kathleen) had solid rounds for us, and that shows the progression they have made this season.  If we putt better tomorrow, we can have a good finish."

Final round action begins Sunday at 8:30 a.m.  Admission is free.
