Osland Leads Peg Barnard By One Shot, Spartans 4th

Stanford, Calif.-Megan Osland shot the round of her Spartan career and currently leads the Peg Barnard Invitational with a 68, and the San Jose State women's golf team is tied for fourth at 295 after the first round at the par 71 Stanford Golf Course.

Osland shot her first round in the 60s in her Spartan career.  She started her round on hole #15 and had birdies on #17 and #18 to go two-under through four holes.  On 486-yard, par-five, hole #1, Osland made her first eagle of the day.  She hit her driver to within 220 yards of the hold and hit a hybrid out the rough to get the ball within 10-feet of the hole.  She then sank the putt for a three and the eagle.

After back-to-back bogeys on holes #5 and #6, Osland then made her second eagle of the day on the par-5, 488-yard #7.  After she drove it to within 215 yards of the hole, her next shot landed the ball within 12-feet of the hole.  With the pin in the back corner of the green, Osland hit a putt the broke a foot to the right and fell in for a three.   She finished her round with two bogeys and a birdie for her best round in a Spartan uniform.

"Megan played incredibly well today," said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  "On the two holes she made eagles, she played those holes the best I have seen anyone play them on the course."

For the day, San Jose State shot a 295 for the round to tie with #2 Washington and Rollins College.  Regan De Guzman shot a one-over 72 for her round with three birdies.   Cha Cha Willhoite shot a 75 with one birdie.  Rachelle Reali had an 80 with three birdies, while Jennifer Brumbaugh shot an 81 with two birdies.

Playing as individuals, Annie Sabater shot an 81, while Jody Ho recorded an 82.  Sabater was playing in her first collegiate tournament, while Ho played in her first tournament since May of 2011.

"I am pleased with the way Megan and Regan played," said Dormann.  "However, we need to have a better fourth score on our team.  We lost an opportunity today to have a good round but were pumped to Jody out there on the course.

"The conditions were good today.  We were driving the ball nicely, but we need to improve our short game so we can have a good finish on Sunday."

San Jose State begins second-round action on Sunday at 8:30 a.m., from holes #5, 6, and 7.
