Tucson, Ariz.-On a day that saw wind gusts as high as 28 miles per hour in Tucson, the San Jose State women's golf team was able to control their ball enough to finish eighth at the Wildcat Invitational Tuesday afternoon at the Vistoso Golf Club in Tucson.
"It was very windy today," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "The wind could blow the ball any way it wanted. I knew we had to hit the ball solidly, or it would end up in the desert."
The Spartans shot a 312 in the third round after finishing the second round earlier in the day with a 294, the third-lowest third-round score on the day. Even tournament champion and host Arizona had problems with the conditions, shooting a 303 in the final round after shooting a 286 in each of the first two rounds.
Madeleine Ziegert tied for eighth at 220 (+4) after shooting a 74 in her third round, her first top-10 finish this season. Ziegert started her round with seven pars in her first eight holes but had five bogeys on holes 1-9. She ended her round with birdies on three of her final four holes (#11, #13, #14.)
Katrina Delen-Briones finished tied for 22nd after shooting an 81 on Tuesday after starting her round with three consecutive birdies. After starting her round with a quadruple bogey on her first hole, Rachelle Reali rebounded the rest of her round with 12 pars and two birdies as she shot a 78. She finished the tournament tied for 52nd at 237. Jennifer Brumbaugh finished in 55th at 238, while Tiffany Nichols shot a 79 for a three-round total of 239, good for 59th place.
"I am really happy with the way we finished the tournament in the top-10, especially after the way played in the first round," said Dormann. "Rachelle hung in there after her first hole and posted a decent score on a tough day. Maddie finished strong with her three birdies."
San Jose State next competes at the Peg Barnard Invitational on February 19 and 20 at the Stanford Golf Course. The Spartans host the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational on February 28 and March 1 at the Almaden Country Club.
