Oct. 23, 2016

Las Vegas, Nev.—The San José State women’s golf team shot its lowest round of the season and is fifth after the first round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown Sunday afternoon.

The Spartans shot a seven-under 281, and are eight shots behind first-place Baylor who shot a 15-under 273. Idaho is second at 278, while Mountain West foes San Diego State and UNLV are just one shot ahead of San José State at 280.

Individually, three Spartans shot under par for the round, led by Franziska Friedrich who shot a season-best four-under 68, and is tied for fifth place.  Her 68 ties for the low round by a Spartan this season. Friedrich made five birdies and finished her round by making seven consecutive pars.

My Leander shot a two-under 70 and is tied for 15th. She shot her fifth under-par round of the season. Leander made four birdies and 12 pars during her round.

Elizabeth Schultz finished the day tied for 26th at one-under 71.  She made three birdies and 13 pars in the first round.

Alexandra Cooper shot her best round of the season with an even-par 72 and is tied for 36th. She made four birdies during her round.  Abegail Arevalo rounded out the Spartan scoring with a four-over 76 and is tied for 88th.

“We played pretty well today,” said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  “We have to stay aggressive in the next two rounds, and our play on the par 5s have to improve.”

The Spartans begin the second round Monday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.  The team will play with UNLV and Indiana. Live scoring is available at https://www.birdiefire.com/tournament/27341/.
