San Jose, Calif.— As the temperatures climbed during the day, the San José State women’s golf team’s scores lowered as the Spartans finished the day tied for second at 592, two shots behind leader Brigham Young, after two rounds of the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational at the Almaden Golf and Country Club on Monday.

With temperatures well over 90 degrees on Monday, San José State shot a 299 in the first round and was tied for fifth place with UC Irvine.  The Spartans moved up three places after shooting a 293, the low-score of the second round. The team is tied with Colorado who shot 295-297 on Monday.  BYU shot 294-296 for the two-shot lead.  All three teams are 10 shots better than Santa Clara and UC Irvine.

Individually, My Leander is tied for first at three-under 141 with Kendra Dalton of BYU.  Leander shot 71-70 for the two rounds and has not shot a round over par this season.  In the second round, she made three birdies, 14 pars and just one bogey.

Spartan Elizabeth Schultz is tied for eight at 147, lowering her score from a 75 in the first round to even-par 72 in round two.  Alexandra Cooper and Abegail Arevalo are tied for 25th at 152, while Franziska Friedrich is tied for 34th at 155.

“We hung in there today,” said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  “We had a very poor short game the first round, putting and chipping.  We really battled in the second round.  It was a long, hot day.  Our five players gave everything they had the whole day.  They kept us in position to a have a good day tomorrow.”

Two Spartans are playing as individuals.  Fanny Johansson and Arielle Caronna are tied for 58th at 166.

Colorado State’s Katrina Prendergast shot the low round of the tournament with a 67 in the second round.  After shooting a 79 in the first round, she shot even par for the first nine holes of round two.  Prendergast then shot a 31 over the final nine holes and is tied for sixth at two-over 146.

Final round action begins Tuesday with a 9 a.m. shot gun start.  The Spartans will play with BYU and Colorado, beginning on holes 1, 2, 3 and 4.  The awards presentation will be streamed on Facebook Live through the San José State Women’s Golf page.  Check the page after 1:30 p.m. for information on when the presentation will occur.
