Cle Elum, Wash.— Regan De Guzman finished her first round at the NCAA West Regional with bogeys on three of her final four holes and ended the day with a four-over 76. She is currently tied for 45th in the individual standings.
De Guzman made two birdies, six bogeys and 10 pars during her round at the Tumble Creek Club at the Suncadia Resort. After pars on her first two holes, she bogeyed the par-4, 320-yard third hole to go to +1.
De Guzman rebounded on the longest hole of the day, the par-5, 540-yard #4, with a five-foot putt to go-back to even par. She made pars on the next four holes (#5-8) before a bogey on #9 left her at one-over 37, after nine holes.
On the back nine, De Guzman started with a bogey on #10 but then made pars on the next three holes. On the par-5, 525-yard 314, De Guzman made her second birdie of the day to go back to +1.
She followed up the birdie by making bogeys on three of her final four holes and finished the round at four-over 76.
“Regan struggled with her approach shots today,” said Spartan head coach John Dormann. “She had very few good birdie opportunities. Hopefully, she will be crisper with her irons on Friday.”
Top-ranked Southern California leads the team competition after shooting a four-under 284. Trojan Kyung Kim leads the individual leader board with a six-under 66. Eleven players shot under par for the first round. The top-eight teams and top-two individuals (not on an advancing team) will advance to the 2014 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship, May 20-23, in Tulsa, Okla.
Second round action begins at 7:30 a.m. on Friday. De Guzman begins her round at 12:45 p.m. off of #10.
