Kapalua, Maui--Senior women's golfer Megan Osland continues her strong spring play as she moved into a tie for fifth after two rounds of the Anuenue Spring Break Classic in Maui Tuesday afternoon. The San José State team moved up one spot to fourth in the team standings with a 289 in the second round.
Osland, who has not finished out the top-10 this spring, shot a two-under 70 in the second round and is tied with three other golfers for fifth at one-over 145. She made four birdies and was never over-par on her round. Starting on the sixth hole, she recorded a par on the par-5, 471-yard hole, then made birdies on #7 and #8 to go to -2. A bogey on #11 sent Osland back to -1, but five consecutive pars before birdies on #17 and #1 had her at -3. Osland made a bogey on #3, but finished with two pars for the 70.
My Leander remained in the top-20 as she moved up two spots into a tie for 14th with three others. She shot an even-par 72 Tuesday and is three-over (147) for the tournament. Leander started her round on #6, making a bogey and was +1 for her first four holes. A birdie on the par-5 #10 sent her back to even, but her score flip-flopped over the next six holes. She made a bogey on #12, responded with a birdie on #13, then birdied #15 to go one-under before a bogey on #16 put her back to even. After pars on #17, 18, 1 and 2, Leander made a birdie on #3 but ended her round with a bogey on #5.
Kathleen Rojas also shot a 72 for her second round and is tied for 46th at 155. Rojas made four birdies and 10 pars in the round. Her 72 ties for her lowest round of the season.
Regan De Guzman is just outside of the top-20 as she is tied for 21st at 149. She shot a 77 in the second round and made birdies on #14 and #18.
Elizabeth Schultz improved her score in the second round with a 75 and is tied for 37th at 152. She made three birdies and 10 pars during her round.
Fanny Johansson, playing as an individual, shot an 81 and is tied for 78th at 166.
The Spartans shot their third-best round of the season with a 289 as they moved up to fourth at 588. UC Davis leads the tournament at 577, followed by Texas at 582 and Oregon at 585. Right behind San José State are Louisville at 589, SMU at 591 and Oregon State at 597.
"We had a very nice round today," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "There were some unusual conditions today as the lack of wind made the course more `scoreable'. The players also had to adjust as each hole played differently than normal. We did a good job of adjusting and capitalizing on the conditions."
The final round of the Anuenue Spring Break Classic begins Wednesday with a 7:45 a.m. shotgun start. The Spartans will play with UC Davis, Texas and Oregon, beginning holes 1-4.
