Women's Golf Fourth, Three Spartans In Top-20

March 3, 2014

San Jose, Calif.--Three Spartans are in the top-20, and San José State is fourth after two rounds of the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational Monday at the Almaden Golf & Country Club.

San José State was tied for the lead after the first round with San Francisco at 295, the third-lowest single-round score of the season.    My Leander shot a season-best one-under 71, while Megan Osland shot an even-par 72 to lead the team.  Each player had four birdies during her round.

"We played a very solid first round," said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  "It was one of our better rounds at Almaden Golf & Country Club in recent years."

The Spartan shot a 301 in the second round as Rachelle Reali led the tam with a 74, followed by Kathleen Rojas at 75, and Alexandra Kristofersson and Leander at 76.

"We began the second round total out of focus and energy.  We were never able to bounce back.  Tomorrow's round will show us where we are a team right now."

Leander is tied for eighth at 147, followed by Osland at 15th with a 149, Reali at 20th at 150, Rojas at 26th with a 151, and Kristofersson at 33rd with a 153.

Oregon, ranked 20th in the Golfstat rankings, leads the tournament at 588 after shooting a 292 in the second round.   Northern California is represented in the top-five of the team standings as UC Davis and San Francisco are tied for second at 590, followed by the Spartans at 596, and Santa Clara in fifth at 599.

Individually, Sammi Stevens of New Mexico and Martina Edberg of Cal State Fullerton are tied for the individual title at two-under 142.  Both recorded 71s in each round on Monday.  Oregon's Marcelle Pranovia has the tournament's only eagle, a three on the par-5, 475-yard 18th, during the first round.

Final round action begins Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m., at the Almaden Golf & Country Club.
