Stanford, Calif.—Three San José State women’s golfers are in the top-20 after the first round of the Peg Barnard Invitational hosted by Stanford at the Stanford Golf Course on Saturday.  The Spartans are currently tied for third at 293 with Stanford.

Regan De Guzman and Megan Osland led the Spartan team after each shot a one-over 72, and are tied for 11th.  De Guzman made one birdie, two bogeys and 15 pars including her final nine holes, while Osland made three birdies, four bogeys and 11 pars.  She went -2 over her final seven holes.

Elizabeth Schultz shot a two-over 73 on Saturday and is tied for 14th.  She made two birdies, four bogeys and 12 pars, including pars over her final five holes.

My Leander and Kathleen Rojas each shot a 76 and are tied for 28th.  Leander made 14 pars during her round including a stretch of six straight over holes 10-15.  Rojas made a birdie and 14 pars over the 18 holes.

Fanny Johansson played in her first tournament as Spartan.  Playing as an individual, she shot an 80 in her first round, making two birdies and six pars.

The Spartans shot a nine-over 293 on the day and are just one shot behind Oregon in second place.  San José State is part of a group of seven that is separated by 10 shots from the Ducks at 292 to Gonzaga and Colorado at 302.  UC Davis leads the tournament after shooting a one-under 283.

“We played a solid round to open the semester,” said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  “We kept our composure when things went a little sideways and managed to put good scores on the board.  We need to capitalize on the par-5 birdie opportunities on Sunday.”

The Spartans begin the final round on Sunday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.  The team will begin on holes 1-4.  Admission to the tournament is free.
